THE JOURNALS
1950 - 1970
The Journals
Way back before the Internet was a thing, the club used to produce a monthly journal to communicate with the membership, each magazine contained info on meetings, happenings/results/impending issues etc that were important to the way the club operated, reading some of these journals is like looking at a personal diary of the club over the different years and we found some interesting snippets of racing history for example;
In 1970 the club secretary Jim Swift along with Chris Lowe from MCD, (then owners of Brands Hatch) went to Florida at Easter for the Daytona 200 to instigate what was called the Match Races. which became more widely known as The Transatlantic Challenge. Indeed I was surprised when I read that.
Another debate raging was the introduction of a Production class in the 60's members were torn as to allow these standard bikes in, it might tarnish the club's "pure racing" reputation, then there was a debate about Clutch Starts in 1959 !
If you have nothing better to do on a wet cold winters evening have a troll through them, it gives a real flavour of how the club was run in those years, not all years are covered, owing to a flood during our tenure at Lydden, but those that do exist from 1951 -72 are a insight into our history.
